Group Counseling & More

Therapy in Numbers: Sometimes We Have to Work Together

When you hear the term “group counseling,” there might be a variety of images from TV or other media that pop into your head. You might imagine a circle of people sitting in therapy with folding chairs and cheap coffee in Styrofoam cups, or a call-and-response type of introduction of your name every time you want to speak. For most of us, it can already feel difficult to even open up to an individual therapist you trust; the idea of sharing your thoughts and concerns with a bunch of strangers in a group setting can seem even more daunting.

However, while everyone’s mental health and life situation is quite different, the emotions of anxiety, stress, depression, anger, sadness, guilt, or whatever negative mental state you’re experiencing are truly a shared human experience. Sharing your struggles in a group counseling environment with ordinary folks who are experiencing something similar can be a great way to understand these overwhelming feelings, and eventually learn to cope with them.
